Excerpt from Collected Papers: Field Service School for Medical Officers
Now Field Service Regulations, paragraph 142, says: A successful march, whether in peace or war, is one that places the troops at their destination at the proper moment and in the best possible condi tion.
Good marching is secured by careful prepara tion, strict discipline, and the due observance of march sanitation. Of these three requirements, by far the most important is discipline. Without it, the troops are a mere crowd, a mob, a herd of cattle, a flock of sheep - no preparation, no matter how care ful, does any good, march sanitation is a joke.
